The young black man hesitated as he stood outside the small furniture manufacturing shop in South Los Angeles. He was dressed neatly, and he was well-groomed. He eyed the building warily. The sign on the narrow glass door, in English and Spanish, read "help wanted" and trabajo aqui. After a moment he went in and politely asked for an application. The petite receptionist, a young Latina, handed him an application form, with an airy nonchalance. She curtly suggested that he fill it out and bring it back. When he asked if there would be an interview, she haltingly said only if there was a position open. A couple of hours later two young Latinos came in to apply. One was immediately hired. The other was told that another helper job might open up within the next few days.
The dangers of unintended consequences
Before the Middle East's unfriendly volcano erupts again, it would behoove the National Security team to advise the president that kicking butt in Iran, like kicking Iraq's gluteal region, triggers the law of unintended consequences.

Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean has died. Coming of age in the shadow of Charlie Parker, McLean mastered that saxophonist's style of bebop and went on to become an early advocate of the free jazz movement of the 1960s. In 2001, McLean was recognized as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. That same year, he was inducted into Downbeat magazine's Jazz Education Hall of Fame. McLean died Friday at his home in Hartford, Conn., after a long illness. He was 73 years old.

Only 34% of Hamilton County voters, and virtually all African American voters, were from the city.

The separation in wealth, knowledge, geography and the nation’s shift in political ideology allowed us to deflect the race debate on every front.

Marcus Garvey told us time after time that black people are a nation within a nation. That being true, he argued, we must act as such. It's great for people to love and accept us, but should we spend our every waking hour trying to force them to do so?

Celeb pals Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck and Laurence Fishburne have donated sleek, custom-made motorcycles to an online charity auction to benefit a planned memorial in Washington for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The memorial will be built on the National Mall, according to the Web site for Build the Dream, which is promoting the project. The centerpiece of the memorial, the "Stone of Hope," will feature a 3.3-meter likeness of King.

A widespread drought in the Horn of Africa is killing the livelihoods of herders. Hundreds of thousands of cattle, camel and other livestock have perished, with their carcasses now littering the region. Some herders have resorted to marrying off their daughters, some as young as ten, to get dowries that restock their herds. Activists are trying to stop the practice.

The conundrum of consciousness, capital
Marcus Garvey told us time after time that black people are a nation within a nation. That being true, he argued, we must act as such. Other groups in America have no problem demonstrating their nationhood within the borders of the U.S. Black folks seem to have some reservations about doing it, maybe because many of us are still trying to assimilate and be "accepted" by white people. It's great for people to love and accept us, but should we spend our every waking hour trying to force them to do so?
“Crash” and the self-indulgence of white America
The problem of "Crash" can be summed up through one phrase from the studio's promotional material, which asserts that the film "boldly reminds us of the importance of tolerance." That's exactly the problem. On the surface, the film appears to be bold, speaking of race with the kind of raw emotion that is rare in this culture. But that emotion turns out, in the end, to be manipulative and diversionary. The problem is that the film can't move beyond the concept of tolerance, and tolerance is not the solution to America's race problem. White people can - and often do - learn to tolerate difference without ever disturbing the systemic, institutional nature of racism. The core problem is not intolerance but white supremacy
